Tip Tuesday: Make it Legal!

At Bateau, we love everything about the wedding celebration! There is nothing like being surrounded by people you love, eating delicious food, and of course, wearing the perfect gown. Romance is in the air and it’s easy to forget the boring, legal side of getting married -- the Marriage Certificate.

Who would have thought that the most important document to making your marriage official would be such an easy thing to forget? Here’s how to make sure your marriage is legal:

  1. Contact the county clerk or city hall in the county you plan to hold your wedding ceremony at to find out how far in advance you will need to apply for a license in that state or county. You will need to fill out an application to receive a Marriage License before obtaining your official Marriage Certificate. Find out if you and your spouse-to-be need to both be present to fill out the application or if only one person needs to be present. Some states allow you to fill out the application online. They should guide you on how to properly fill it out.

  2. Make sure you find out how long you have to sign and return the license once you have received it. States differ on when licenses expire.

  3. Hold onto your Marriage License and make sure to pack it or bring it with you wherever you will be married.

  4. Get it signed by your Officiant at the rehearsal dinner or on wedding day.

  5. You or your officiant needs to mail in or physically present the signed document to the county office that you originally applied at. They will certify the document and keep a copy for permanent records and then send you the original official certificate.

  6. You’re married! Congratulations!
